Growing leaf and stem plants

Most leaf and stem crops like a fairly rich, moist and well-drained soil. They tend to be fast growers, which also makes them susceptible to early bolting. The exact location, support material and length of cultivation vary from crop to crop. That's why we always mention with each crop exactly what is needed for the whole process, so you can start growing well prepared. Would you like to learn more about the different leaf and stem crops beforehand?

Sowing leaf and stem crops

If you want to harvest leaf and stem crops over a longer period, you should regularly sow them in somewhat smaller quantities. Spinach can be sown very early and from March is followed by endive, rocket, turnip greens and the various types of lettuce. Want to extend the growing season? Then a small tunnel or greenhouse will do the trick. Besides spinach, chard can also overwinter in it, although it needs a cover of, for example, fleece.
