Perennial garden plants

Perennial garden plants can be enjoyed for years, as they spring up from their roots every year. It is also very nice that perennial garden plants require little care.

CARING FOR PERENNIALS

In spring (from early March onwards), most perennials need to be 'cleaned up'. Cut off all dead stems and remove dead leaves. Make sure the new shoots are not damaged. Hedge shears are an ideal tool for this. Leave evergreen perennials that still look good alone. Cut back ugly perennials just above ground level, they will grow back nice and healthy. If a perennial is still not doing well in May, it is most likely dead and needs to be replaced. Want to enjoy lots of flowers for as long as possible during flowering? Then regularly pick or cut away spent flowers, this will ensure that the perennial produces more and more flowers.

PERENNIALS IN WINTER

You can leave most potted perennials outside in the event of frost - provided the flower pot is winter-proof, of course. The best way to protect outdoor perennials in winter is to clear the border in spring. This is because the dead plant parts protect the soil from frost. In winter or early spring, spread a layer of compost between the perennials (a so-called mulch layer). This is good for the structure of the soil and also retains a lot of moisture. You can also add some mixed organic fertiliser to feed the perennials.
