The turmeric plant Curcuma longa is an easy-to-care-for pot plant that not only knows how to fascinate you with its exotic flowers that last up to 3 months, but also with its large, highly decorative leaves. In addition, you can harvest the roots in winter and use them for cooking. Turmeric root can be used fresh, similar to ginger, or dried and grated as a spice powder. The intense yellow colour of the roots gives curry mixtures their typical colour. This is why the turmeric plant Curcuma longa (Curcuma longa) is also called turmeric, turmeric or turmeric. The turmeric plant belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) and is native to China and South Asia.

The turmeric plant Curcuma longa blooms from July to September and grows 80 to 100 cm tall. The perennial plants like a warm, sunny to semi-shaded location with high humidity and a permeable, nutrient-rich soil. In summer, the plants thrive best in the garden, on the balcony and terrace at temperatures above 18° C. Here, the soil should always be moist, but accumulated moisture (stagnant moisture) should be avoided. In winter, the plant needs less light and water, but even then the temperature should be at 18°C (+/- 5°C) and the substrate should not dry out completely. (Curcuma longa)
